Cancer Support Services in Nottingham | City Spotlight

The incidence of cancer in Nottingham has remained stable over the last decade, however cancer survival rates for the city have signicantly improved. Nottingham has also seen an increase in cancer support services available across the city and surrounding areas.

For our latest City Spotlight, we’ve taken a look at just a handful of some of those incredible services on offer in Nottingham.

Headway – The Brain Injury Association

The charity supports a number of people to live with the long-term effects of brain injury, illness and recovery. People can access support through a helpline, online communities or forums and informational resources. It also signposts to support services available in different areas. 

BME Cancer Communities

The aim of BMECC is to preserve and protect the health of people in particular but not exclusively from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities affected by cancer by providing and assisting in the provision of culturally sensitive and appropriate practical advice, services directed to improving participation in BME cancer research and detection initiatives, and diversity training.

PASIC

PASIC provides emotional, social and practical support to families of children and young people with cancer living in the East Midlands to improve the quality of their lives. They support the whole family and offer the means to build support networks and reduce isolation to help make a positive difference to families. Services included organising social support, organising grants and special day outs for families. 

East Midlands Children’s and Young Person’s Integrated Cancer Service (EMCYPICS)

The East Midlands Children’s and Young Persons’ Integrated Cancer Service is an integrated service for the investigation of children and young people  (those aged between 0 and 18) with suspected cancer and the treatment of those diagnosed with cancer. They also provide emotional and practical support for children and their families at what is a difficult time

Sistas Against Cancer

Sista’s Against Cancer is a specialist organisation in promoting, supporting and encouraging self help groups, both locally in Nottinghamshire and nationwide. Helping women with cancer to take better control of their circumstances or conditions, gain strength and support from others, and improve their self-care. Meetings are fortnightly on Mondays 12-2pm.

When You Wish Upon a Star

When You Wish Upon a Star has a simple mission, to grant the Wishes of children living with a life threatening illness. They also organise magical day outs and trips. Their Wishes have the power to transform the lives of the children and families they work with and since 1990 they have proudly granted over 17,500 Wishes across the UK.
