The port city of Southampton can be found in the South-East county of Hampshire. It is famous the world over for its port location and being the departure point for both the Mayflower and the Titanic. Southampton is also the location for a strong collection of cancer support services.

For our latest City Spotlight, we take a look at the cancer services available for the people of Southampton.

Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service – Southampton

Based at East Wing at Southampton General Hospital this support service run by the Macmillan Cancer charity provides free and confidential information and advice about cancer in a relaxed and comfortable environment. They provide practical help and advice plus all kinds of support including complementary therapies, benefits advice, counselling and a wig fitting service.

Wessex Cancer Trust – Waterside Cancer Support Centre

A Hythe support centre providing emotional and physical care to people living with or affected by cancer. The service offers a relaxing, non-clinical environment, surrounded by people who have lived experience of a cancer diagnosis themselves or someone close to them. There are also wellbeing activities, support groups, counselling and complementary therapies, such as aromatherapy, yoga, reflexology and reiki.

GenesisCare – Southampton

Part of the UK’s leading private provider of advanced radiotherapy and cancer care, offering fast access to the latest technology and treatments. They specialise is clinical services like radiography, chemotherapy, and CT scans, and offer personalised care and treatment plans that include Penny Brohn UK wellbeing therapies such as relaxation and mindfulness meditation.

Lymphoma Action – Southampton Support Group

A national chain of support groups providing an opportunity to meet others and share experiences who have or are living with lymphoma. Meetings feature a mixture of speakers and discussions on related topics, practical help and advice from others affected by the disease. At the moment most of the services are provided by online support groups, so check online for more information.

Maggie’s Centre Southampton

The Southampton branch of this national support organisation offering free help and support ton all those affected by cancer. Based at Southampton General Hospital they provide information, activities and a space to meet and share experiences with others. Services include support groups, welfare and benefits advice, wellbeing workshops and complementary therapies.

Carers in Southampton

This local charity offers assistance and support for unpaid carers who look after loved ones, friends or neighbours with additional support needs. The service offers telephone information and advice, introductions to support groups and local events, help with emergency planning, a charity helpline open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and the chance to talk to other carers
