We spoke with Fiona Tully at Mission Remission, to learn more about the work they do to make cancer survival less isolating and more empowering, focusing on the message that if treatment is successful, it is possible to feel better after cancer.
Tell us about your organisation?
Mission Remission supports cancer survivors move forward after treatment to live happy, healthy and independent lives. The idea of Mission Remission first began in 2016, when Laura Fulcher x2 cancer survivor before the age of 35, experienced a lack of information and support when her treatment ended. After realising the scale of the issue that millions face, Mission Remission CIC became a fully-fledged charity in December 2019. Our mission is to improve the experience of cancer recovery for every person across the country.
What service do you offer people living with cancer?
We champion cancer survivors, filling the gap in support after treatment, making survival less isolating and more empowering. As a community, we use our experience as a force for good. We help people by running an online platform to move forward after cancer. We run online support groups and discussion, a book club, a fitness program, an advocacy team and a walk and talk group.
Do you have a target demographic who use your services?
Our services are designed for anyone affected by cancer. We support people at all stages, but our primary focus is people who have finished active cancer treatment.
How are you funded?
We are a charity and receive donations from the public, and grants from funders.
Has anything changed for your organisation since the pandemic?
Since the pandemic Mission Remission has grown and adapted to ensure that those affected by cancer continue to receive the support they need. While isolation and uncertainty increased during lockdown, the charity responded by strengthening its online community and finding new ways to keep people connected.
What’s the most rewarding thing about the work you do?
The most rewarding aspect of our work is empowering people to take back control of their lives after cancer. Many survivors feel lost once treatment ends, facing uncertainty about what comes next. Through our resources, community support, and personal stories, we help individuals navigate life beyond cancer with confidence. Seeing people regain their sense of purpose, rebuild their physical and emotional wellbeing, and connect with others who truly understand is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that we are making a real difference helping people move forward with hope and resilience is at the heart of everything we do.
What would you say to those who are considering getting in touch with you but are nervous or apprehensive?
If you’re feeling nervous or unsure about reaching out to Mission Remission, you’re not alone—many people feel the same way at first.
