Cancer Support Services in Newcastle | City Spotlight

For the people living with cancer in Newcastle and Gateshead, cancer survival are up nearly 10% over the last 20 years, with a network of fantastic cancer support services operating across the region.

Our latest City Spotlight takes a look at the city of Newcastle and just a selection of the services available.

Newcastle Brain Tumour Support Group

This is a monthly group that meets on the 2nd Wednesday of every month and offers support to people living with a brain tumour diagnosis. It is an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation for both patients and family and friends also affected. For more information contact Bev North, Specialist Neuro Oncology Nurse on 0191 282 3739. They also have an online support group to share experiences and connect with others affected by a brain tumour.

Macmillan Cancer Support Information Centre at QE Gateshead

Managed and run by Macmillan Cancer Support, this information and support centre located at Queen Elizabeth Hospital offers free and confidential information and support to people living with cancer and those affected by it. It offers support in a relaxed and comfortable environment, whether you have questions about prevention, have just been diagnosed or are living with and beyond cancer the service is there to help. Services include counselling, benefits advice, self-help and support, practical support and courses and workshops.

Natter Group for Neuroendocrine Cancer – North East, Newcastle

Part of a nationwide network of support groups offering a wide range of services all designed to help those affected by neuroendocrine cancer including family and friends. There’s practical and emotional support plus the opportunity to meet others living with these types of cancer. The service is run by nurse specialists and other people living with the illness. All groups offer refreshments and are free to attend, the North East group can be found at the Freeman Hospital.

Relate – Relationship Counselling – Newcastle Upon Tyne

 A cancer diagnosis can have a huge impact on personal relationships and relate can help with all aspects for those with cancer and their family and loved one. The Northumberland & Tyneside Relate 
Centre  offers support for people experiencing issues with family life, intimate relationships or facing difficulties with sex or fertility. The service offers psycho-sexual therapy and relationship counselling for people concerned about relationship and/or sex-related issues following a cancer diagnosis.

Marie Curie Hospice – Community Palliative Care – Newcastle

Part of the world famous Marie Curie group, this hospice provides a range of short-term care options to help people live well with a terminal illness and those affected around them, including in-patient care, at-home care and community services. They can emotional support, complementary therapies, occupational therapy, advice on welfare rights, and group workshops for patients, family and friends for the people of Newcastle and the surrounding area.

Maggie’s Centre Newcastle

A relaxed and friendly support centre that provides practical information, activities as well as a space to meet and share experiences with others. Services include support groups, welfare and benefits advice, wellbeing workshops and complementary therapies. People affected by cancer are encouraged to drop in for a chat and a cup of tea or visit the website for more details. During the Covid crisis some services will be only available online or over the phone so visit their website for more details.
