Based on the mouth of the River Wear, the port city of Sunderland was once known as as the “Largest Shipbuilding Town in the World”. Today, it is a bustling northern city and home to the Sunderland International Airshow, which is the largest free air show in Europe. It is also home to a fantastic selection of cancer support services.

Our latest City Spotlight takes a look at cancer support services in Sunderland.

Cancer Connections

This cancer support centre is located in South Tyneside and provides information and advice to anyone living with cancer and their loved ones. They offer a chance to talk to other people who have been living with cancer and its effects as well as offering access to services such as counselling, complementary therapies and support groups.

Macmillan Cancer Support

Part of the world-famous Macmillan cancer charity this Macmillan cancer support centre is in the Swan Centre of the QE Hospital in Gateshead. It aims to offer services in a relaxed and comfortable environment where you can find help and advice of every kind for everyone affected by cancer. 

The Charlie & Carter Foundation

Based in South Shields and part of a national charitym this foundation offers financial support to parents of seriously ill children with life limiting conditions that require 24 hour nursing care or specialist nursing facilities. The Foundation also raises awareness and provides information, advice and support for families coping with cancer and other serious illnesses. 

FACT – Fighting all Cancers Together

This local charity provides regular support groups and activities for people living with cancer across the region. They offer support, awareness and education with an aim to build communities with others in similar positions to themselves. There are also two charity shops in the region to help raise money for their vital services.

Lymphoma Action – Chester-le-Street Support Group

This national charity offers two regional online supports groups or people living with lymphoma providing an opportunity to meet others and share experiences. Attendees can expect a mixture of speakers and discussions on lymphoma-related topics. Their website offers a large hub of information as well as a telephone helpline.

Life Kitchen

This exceptional organisation offers free cookery classes to those living with taste and smell loss caused by cancer and covid. These friendly cookery classes are particularly for people who have received chemotherapy and have lost their sense of taste due to treatment. The classes focus on maximizing flavour, nutrition and enjoyment from food.
