The city of York dates back to Roman times and is home to York Castle, built by William the Conquerer and the stunning cathedral, York Minster. In addition to the beautiful scenery and heritage, York is also home to an abundance of cancer support services.

Our latest City Spotlight takes a look at just a small collection of the incredible cancer services in York.

York Against Cancer

The small charity that makes a big difference is based at the cancer care centre at York Hospital and provides practical help and support for people living with cancer. The service offers a wide range of support including practical help and support for patients and their families living with cancer in York, North and East Yorkshire and they fund vital research and education to prevent and cure cancer in the future. They even offer a free minibus service for York cancer patients for their treatments at St James’s Hospital in Leeds. York Breast Friends

York Breast Friends are a group of people who have a shared experience of a breast cancer diagnosis. Using individual experiences they offer support to anyone affected by breast cancer from the point of diagnosis, throughout active treatment and in living with and beyond their cancer diagnosis. This peer support group usually offer many ways to meet others with similar experiences but due to COVID-19 services have had to change. Contact them direct for more information.

Bluebird Care York

Part of the UK wide Bluebird Care service provider that offers support and care at home. Services range from shopping and companionship to full personal care and live-in care in the York area. They work with and alongside families and individuals to tailor services to help customers stay in control of their own care for as long as they are able to. York Prostate Cancer Support Group

Service based at York Hospital that offers information, guidance and support to people living with and affected by prostate cancer. From practical information to a listening ear they also host guest speakers to talk on relevant subjects plus the opportunity to speak to clinical nurse specialists. Supported by Tackle Prostate Cancer, there is also a helpline for those needing help and support. For more information please visit the website.

5K Your Way Move Against Cancer Support Group – York

Only started this year at the start of lockdown, this is a community-based initiative to encourage those living with and affected by cancer to be more active. They particularly encourage people to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at a local 5k Your Way parkrun event on the last Saturday of every month, followed by a cuppa and a chat. Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital

Support centre offering a wide range of services to help all those dealing with cancer and its effects. There’s practical advice and information including help with benefit and welfare advice, hair loss, complementary therapies, emotional support and respite services. The centre also holds creative activity sessions as well as skincare and makeup workshops.
