Small Charity Week | Cancer Care Map

Small Charity Week is a campaign which was first established by the Foundation for Social Improvement in 2010 to celebrate and raise the profile of the small charity sector. This year’s Small Charity Week is honoured between Monday 20th to Friday 24th June and we think it is a great opportunity to let you know a bit more about the charity behind Cancer Care Map: The Richard Dimbleby Cancer Fund.

The Richard Dimbleby Cancer Fund

The charity was first established in 1966 following the death of Broadcaster Richard Dimbleby from testicular cancer at the age of 52. Richard decided to admit he was ill with cancer, which, in those days, was a taboo subject. It was helpful in building public consciousness of the disease and investing more resources in finding a cure. The Richard Dimbleby Cancer Fund was founded in his memory.

Over the years the charity has worked predominantly in the field of cancer care and support, with the setting up of the Richard Dimbleby Chair of Cancer Research at King’s College London, over £2.7million awarded to research projects through the Richard Dimbleby Research Fund, and through the work of Dimbleby Cancer Care at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital where the support services are now based at Guy’s Cancer Centre and Queen Mary’s, Sidcup.

In 2015 the charity began work on the development of Cancer Care Map, and from 2019 this has become the sole focus of the charity.

The Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby who has been involved with the charity from the start, taking over as Chair in 2013.

Being a small charity

As a small charity, we are able to be agile and deliver our work with relatively low overheads.

However, as we are such a small team, we are reliant on public donations, grants from Trusts and Foundations, support from volunteers, as well as pro bono support from partners and stakeholders, to continue to do the work we do.

We are grateful for this support which has enabled us to develop the Cancer Care Map website to deliver a vital resource that is now being used by 1,000s of people each month right across the country.
